[ Day 1 ] Wednesday, June 17, Hartland-Florenceville-Hartland (42km)

Arrive in Hartland, population 800, Tuesday, June 16

Wednesday, June 17, Hartland to Hartland
Origin & Destination: Covered Bridge BB, Hartland, NB

Route Description: Upstream to Florenceville on 105 (east side of Saint John River) and return by same route--passing through a few even smaller communities along the way. Road was mostly flat and distance short, but we had all the cycling we wanted for day one.

We had blue skies all day--a chill with gusts of headwind going upstream, warm with diminishing tailwinds returning.

This was shakedown day. We extracted the bicycles from the car, unfolded them, packed them as we will tomorrow, and headed out to see if they and we were ready for the journey ahead. The bicycles passed their test! After ibuprofen and dinner we feel fine.

Highlights: semi-wild gardens of lupin, roses, margaritas;

friendly, interested people; unlocking our credit cards; manicured lawns and gardens.  Both Florenceville and Hartland have covered bridges; Hartland's is the world's longest (1282 feet). At the B&B: our first acquaintance with a straw-bale garden; a host who is also the published local history expert. Trivia: Florenceville is named after Florence Nightingale and claims to be the french fry capital of the world!
