[ Day 2 ] Thursday, June 18, Hartland to Nackawic (68km)

Origin: Covered Bridge BB. Destination: Big Axe Brewery BB
Route Description: We took the simple option: (South on 105 (River Road) all the way.

Cool and mostly cloudy in the morning. Mostly sunny and warm in the afternoon. The breeze was on our faces until late in the ride.

Fortified by Doris Kennedy's bacon and eggs and the offer from Lawrence and her to rescue us anywhere in the Maritimes we might need it (!!), we left our car in their care and set off for Nackawic. With no services for 62km, we consumed our ample snacks, yearned for a coffee stop, and wished we had 6 bottles of water instead of 4.

Highlights:  "Guided tour" of the Pembroke Cemetary by Michelle and Justin Coughlan who live in the adjacent home (former students of our Hartland host). Encounter and extended conversation with Toby from Switzerland who is 9 days into his solo bicycle trip across Canada.
He hopes to finish before the snow falls. We dropped into a large salmon incubator, Gray Aqua Farms, where eggs mature to salmon large enough to be caged in the Bay of Fundy until market ready--no tours offered.

Our B&B is the Big Axe Brewery established by our hosts, Peter and Tatiana Cole. Upon arrival, we sampled first their water and then a cider and a "blonde" brew while enjoying the river view (in this stretch, a downstream dam has created a reservoir, ruining the natural salmon cycle).

"Downtown," as the post-16-snow-day graduation took place in the hockey arena, we ate pizza across the street, followed by ice cream with young soccer players and their families--quite interested in our trip.

In two days we have:
visited the town with the "world's French fry capital" (but did not taste.)
crossed the "world's longest covered bridge."
beheld the "world's biggest axe!"

  1. Ahem! Your narrative just begs for one or two more photos: I would love to see those covered bridges and the river! BTW: I can't for the life of me understand why you passed up a sample of those French fries..... At least a taste... Keep pedaling, and keep posting. It will be fun to follow your journey! Fuertes abrazos amigos, Norm
