Route Description: The route today had three parts, each about 24km and having its own destination.
Weather: Clear and sunny; slight tail wind in the morning; too much head wind in the afternoon.
Today was a beautiful bicycle ride.
We had more traffic for part three than we would like, but it offered some beautiful views
into small harbors and across the bay to where we had ridden in the morning.
And tonight we can hear the waves from our bay side motel.
The mostly fine crushed rock rail trail
of part two had some rough spots, but elevated above shore and shoreline communities, it provided benches to stop to enjoy the vistas of the bay and a cross wind through trees that kept us cool.We both became aware that our speed in the final kilometers on the rail trail increased as we anticipated coffee at the old station Bike and Bean Cafe.
Part one ranks among the best bicycle rides we have ever done. Fortified by an elegant breakfast at Century B&B, we rounded the end of the Aspotogan peninsula, left the Mahone Bay shoreline, and followed the St. Margaret's Bay shoreline to the head of the bay. The pavement was smooth, the traffic minimal, and the hills gentle. The occasional seagull cry--in places we rode close enough to the shore to hear the lapping of the water against the stones.
Nestled in a wooded grove above Bayswater Beach and Park is one of two memorials to those who died on September 2, 1998 when the Swissair 111 flight exploded and fell just outside of St. Margaret's Bay.
We reflected quietly as we read the plaques and names.
Further along we stopped to photograph the colorful fishing shacks of Northwest Cove fishermen. Later we listened to the voices of the children, transmitted over the water from the sailboats, as they were learning to sail at the Hubbards Sailing Club.
One: The 329 from Blandford to Hubbards, ending at the Trellis Restaurant. Two: St. Margaret's Bay (Rail to) Trail to Tantallon, ending at the French Village Station--Bike & Bean Cafe.Three: The 333 from Tantallon to our motel in Indian Harbour.
