Origin:
Balmoral Motel
Destination: Dolan's Inn & Suites
Route Description: The 6 all the way (Sunrise Trail)
Light traffic until last 10 km
Occasional shoulders, gently rolling
Weather: Mostly overcast and cool early. Clearing, sunny and slightly hazy in the afternoon.
At breakfast this morning we were sad to read that the Spitfire Arms in Windsor, where Bob had read a poem with the band, was gutted by fire.
Today we surpassed 1000 km, the longest distance and time of any bicycle trip we have taken. But who's counting? The bicycles continue to work well; the riders are feeling stronger. That rear wheel flat problem is now ancient history. Life is good.
Our ride today generally followed the Northumberland Strait
with vistas out to the water for much of the ride. We enjoyed a snack break (alas, no places for coffee on today's ride) in the pleasant town park of River John on a purple Lions Club picnic table. At the Seafoam Lavender Gardens Marney learned from the owner, Dave ( a University of Colorado grad), when and how to prune lavender in the spring. We thought we had a travel challenge until we met today a group of Canadian and southeast Asian students walking across Canada, van-supported. Having started in Victoria in March, they will finish in St. John, Newfoundland. We passed two of them later in the morning.
Pictou will be our "home base" for our Cape Breton excursion Thursday and Friday. Pictou was founded in 1767, the birthplace of New Scotland. Scottish
Clan banners are hung from telephone poles along the waterfront and we chanced on a group of bagpipers practicing for a performance at a local restaurant.
