[ Day 49 ] Tuesday, Aug 4 Riverview to Sussex, NB- (74km)

Today, a landscape dominated by what appear to be prosperous farms intermixed with patches of rural hard-times.

Origin: Coverdale B&B

Destination: Covered Bridge Inn

Route Description: The 112 to Salisbury, the 106 to Petticodiac, the 890 to Sussex

Weather: Sun, cloudy, a few drops of rain, and a strong head wind

Our journey passed 1000 mile mark today.

A delicious oven-baked apple pancake at the B&B fortified us well for our long day today. This was our first day of riding fully loaded since our family trip on PEI when Kristin and Benny provided us all with a van to transfer luggage between lodging places. It took several kilometers to get used again to the heavier bicycles.

We encountered minimal traffic today on our route. After a gently, rolling road to Salisbury and Petitcodiac, we began a long series of climbs over Corn Hill. This climb provided lovely views across many fields of corn down into the valley and up to the other ridge. We stopped high on the hill to talk briefly with
Ruth Banscombe whose flags flying in her yard showed the strength of the head wind that challenged us most of the day.

We unexpectedly came across two places to stop and eat today:

The Family Friendly Restaurant outside Petticodiac for lunch and

the beautiful Cedar Cafe at the Cornhill Nursery where we savored delicious desserts and coffee. We found both places just as we both needed a cycling break--such good luck!

At one point about 8 km outside Sussex as we stopped to drink water, a pick up driver stopped to see if we needed help. Although we reassured him that we were fine, he promised to give us a lift into Sussex if we were at the same spot when he returned in 45 minutes. No lift needed this time, we appreciated his kind offer.

Sussex is well known for the covered bridges still standing in the area.

Bob rode through the 1908 Kennebecasis Covered Bridge just outside Sussex.
