[ Day 50 ] Wednesday, Aug 5 Sussex to Gagetown, NB (85km)

Origin: Covered Bridge Inn

Destination: Step Aside B&B

Route description:  The 10, the 710, the 715, the Jemseg-Gagetown ferry, the 102.

Weather: Hot, mostly sunny, white clouds turning to thunderheads, side winds, rain in front of us but only a few drops on us.

Sussex has a beautiful, old, well-cared for downtown.

We took an hour before we left to enjoy several of its 24 outstanding murals. This lovely town of 5000 residents definitely deserves more time.

We took a chance today and chose a sub-major highway. What luck! Repaving was in progress at both ends which meant that during our two hours on this highway, we frequently had no traffic due to construction stops for vehicles. Found a nice table at a friendly, rural gas station and convenience store for
our picnic lunch and added some local raspberries, now ready for picking. And imagine our surprise to bicycle through The Codys: area of several farms and one church.

Soon we were back on roads with views of St. John River tributaries and eventually the river itself. After racing to make what we feared would be the last ferry of the day to Gagetown--only to find out it runs till midnight--we reflected on how we were about to close the big circle of our trip, returning to sleep in the Step Aside B&B in Gagetown that had sheltered us on June 22.

We were greeted by the new owners, Mary and Bruce, geologists from North Dakota and we are their second guests.  We had heard about the potential sale when we were here before. The serendipity is that, many years ago, this was a birthing house. Mary, whose mother lived in Gagetown, was born in this house. We were grateful to accept their offer to do a load of wash. We enjoyed talking with them about their major life transition and the plans for a year round B&B.
