Route
Description: We followed the south side of the Saint John River---rode the good-asphalt Lincoln Trail out of Fredericton for about 7km, then 13km on good hard-pack trail to Oromocto, then abandoned the trail for giant puddles and fallen trees (from hurricane two years ago.) We returned to highway 102 for the next 43km (narrow shoulder much of the way, diminishing traffic, gently rolling).
Enjoying the benefits of two sedentary days, overcast cool weather, some tail wind and down river route, we cruised today.
Highlights: Interesting breakfast discussion with our host, Christine McLean, media professional. Departing Fredericton, the trail went thru the adjacent, gorgeous gardens of luxury homes. We paused to enjoy them as well as an osprey mom in her nest.
While stopping for coffee 10km from our destination,
we were warned to watch for bear and moose that frequent this stretch of the road. Unfortunately or fortunately we saw none.
We had a rousing welcome complete with water, cognac, and a wee bit of Scotch from our hosts, Maurice and Elaine Harquail--he a former member of Parliament.
Tidbits: New Brunswick is the only province in Canada that declares itself legally bi-lingual. The Stanley Pudding at the Creekside Restaurant in the Village of Gagetown is a must. Lilacs are in full bloom, and we have never seen such huge hostas.
