[ Days 35 & 36 ] Tuesday & Wednesday, July 21-22, Rustico, Cavendish, North Shore (38km)

Origin: Pines Motel
Destination: Pines Motel

Weather: Two chilly, cloudy days, a few rain showers.

Relaxing, low-key days on the North Shore of PEI.

Our motel neighbors,

Pat and Bill from San Diego, with whom we enjoyed two delicious fish dinners at the Blue Mussel Cafe in North Rustico.

Along Rustico Bay is the kilometer long Sea Walk Park and boardwalk
from which to watch the fishing boats come and go. Fishing shacks line the wharf with piles of lobster traps, ropes and buoys. North Rustico is a working fishing town. We passed up the opportunity to take one of the many deep sea fishing charter boats to Instead enjoy the fresh seafood catches.

View from the wharf.

Path to the national park is on the left, harbor opening on right.

North Rustico is one of several entrances to Prince Edward National Park which was established in 1937 to protect the fragile, eroding red cliffs, the beautiful, wide beaches and the North Coast landscapes. We joined other cyclists, joggers, and walkers along the paved shoreline path with stunning views and the sound of surf--peaceful, relaxing-yet-invigorating.

The park bike path led to Cavendish, a favorite island destination for all who have ever loved the Anne of Green Gables series.
The Green Gables Heritage Center, also part of the national park system, is a re-creation of a typical PEI farm of the late 1800s.Green Gables was the home of cousins of Lucy Montgomery's grandparents, and although she never lived there,
it was the place that inspired her imagination. Marney joined the long line to tour the home,
which is a restoration based on the descriptions and details from the books. A short documentary described L.M. Montgomery's life, the magic of the island for her, and her creation of Anne Shirley's life.
